ICAS is a global, immersive platform enabling individuals and institutions to come together to exchange views on a variety of issues pertaining to Asia and beyond. The meeting will take place at the campus of Universitas Airlangga and at various venues throughout the city of Surabaya, Indonesia. As a major maritime hub, Surabaya has long acted as a crossroads of peoples, ideas and goods. Today, it is a bustling metropolis and a gateway to the eastern part of Indonesia and Oceania, where modern skyscrapers scramble with canals and buildings from the colonial era and where people from different parts of Indonesia live alongside descendants of Chinese, Arab and Malay settlers in the city’s vibrant neighborhoods/kampungs.
The conference-festival (“ConFest”) model represents a new phase in our efforts to re-imagine the academic conference for the post-COVID-19 era. We are convinced that in spite of the expediency of digital platforms, in-person academic events are still important. To ensure an engaging, locally-embedded conference experience, ICAS 13 will offer ample opportunities not only for academic exchange in traditional conference venues, but also for exciting workshops, excursions and events embedded within the kinetic urban setting of Surabaya.
