The Newsletter Editorial Internship

The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) in Leiden, the Netherlands is seeking an Editorial Intern (0.6 FTE) to assist with the production of The Newsletter for the period 15 August 2022 to 15 February 2023. We especially welcome candidates with a background in communications, English-language editing, and/or interdisciplinary Asian Studies.

About the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS)

The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) is a global humanities and social sciences research institute and knowledge exchange platform based in Leiden, the Netherlands. IIAS aims to contribute to a better and more integrated understanding of present-day Asian realities as well as to rethink 'Asian Studies' in a changing global context. 

IIAS promotes and disseminates research and analysis about Asia and its place in the contemporary world. Alongside a variety of other programs, this is accomplished through The Newsletter, the flagship print publication of the institute. Additionally, IIAS supports a robust array of digital initiatives, including book reviews, blogs, and podcasts.

Internship Activities

The successful intern will work closely with IIAS colleagues to strengthen the institute’s various communications platforms. In collaboration with Paramita Paul (Chief Editor, IIAS), the intern will especially assist with the production of The Newsletter. Over the course of the internship period, the intern will have the opportunity to participate in at least one “full cycle” of the print edition, from inception and editing to publication and distribution. We offer the opportunity to gain practical experience relevant to multiple fields. Responsibilities include content editing, stylistic proofreading, social media communications, correspondence with contributors, and organizational tasks. The intern will also be encouraged to participate fully in the life of the institute and to pursue projects of special interest within the mission of The Newsletter and its associated platforms.

Internship Profile

Interested applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Excellent command of English, both oral and written
  • Some educational experience in a relevant field (e.g., journalism, Asian Studies, communications)
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • A willingness and desire to learn about publishing
  • Efficiency and an ability to work with deadlines
  • Positivity, motivation, and an enthusiasm for collaborative work

Requirements

The intern must be registered as a student at a Dutch higher education institution for the entire internship period. The size of the internship is 0.6 FTE (three days a week), with specific working days to be determined in consultation with the successful applicant. IIAS offers an internship allowance depending on the duration of the internship.
