The Film After the Rain
After a massive earthquake reduced a Chinese city to rubble, thousands of grieving parents who lost their children were encouraged to bring new life into the world, hoping to fill the void left by unimaginable loss. 'After the Rain' follows two of these families over the course of a decade. Haunted by fear, resentment, and unspoken sorrow, they journey through intergenerational trauma, seeking the fragile light of hope as they build toward an uncertain future.
Jian FAN is an acclaimed documentary director who has explored a wide range of Chinese social issues for over 20 years and is a member of the Documentary Branch of AMPAS. His latest work, She Dances by the Sea, was selected for the International Competition at IDFA 2024. His other notable films include After the Rain, which received a Special Jury Mention at DOC NYC 2021; Still Tomorrow, winner of the Special Jury Award at IDFA 2016; My Land (Berlinale 2016; supported by Sundance Documentary Fund), and The Next Life (IDFA 2011; Jury Prize at the Guangzhou Documentary Film Festival 2011). His work has been screened in competition at prestigious festivals worldwide, including Hot Docs, Full Frame, Sheffield, and Busan. Fan studied at the renowned Beijing Film Academy and is currently based in Chongqing, China.
