"Maji: Painted Representations of the Korean Shamanic Pantheon" by Prof. Boudewijn Walraven (Leiden University)
Intermission
"Music in Korean Shamanic Ritual" by Dr. Roald Maliangkay (University of Amsterdam/IIAS)
Demonstration by noted Korean shaman Jung Munsan and peers of the various forms of vocal and instrumental music used during rituals. The instruments include the hour-glass drum (changgo), the p'iri, an oboe-like instrument, the hojôk, a double-reed oboe, gongs (ching) of different sizes, and cymbals (chegûm).
