Requirements for illustrations

Illustrations in Amsterdam University Press books are generally in gray tones. If your material is in colour, make sure that there is enough contrast to ensure optimal reproduction. To check whether there is sufficient contrast, print out your original photograph or digital image in black and white. The required minimum dimensions for any image are 10x15  centimeters, but the larger, the better.

Digital Images

Resolution: Online, a resolution of 72 dpi (dots per inch) is sufficient. For print publishing, however, 300 dpi is the minimum. To ensure the best quality reproduction, 600 dpi is needed. Please provide digital images with a resolution of at least 600 dpi.

Format: The preferred format is .tiff or tagged image file format. This is because with each reproduction, a jpeg or joint photographic experts group image loses a bit of its quality, whereas a .tiff image does not. Please save your digital images as .tiff.

Line Artwork

For line artwork, whether in .eps or .gif or .tif format, a resolution of 600 dpi is required.

Permissions

If you are using copyrighted material, please make sure that you have asked for and been given permission to use the material.

Sending your files

Image files tend to be too large to be sent by e-mail so please use a file transfer service such as Dropbox or WeTransfer.

Cover Images

It is recommended that an author starts thinking of a possible cover image – among the illustrations included in his/her book - as early as possible. Original photographs are preferred, and the photographer will always be credited.
