Visa Information for Conference Participants
We are delighted to welcome you to Taipei for the 8th Asian Borderlands Research Network (ABRN) Conference. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience, we’ve prepared this page to guide you through the visa requirements and application process.
All participants are responsible for applying for their own visa/entry permit to enter Taiwan. If you require a visa/entry permit, please begin the application process well in advance of your travel date.
Visa/Entry Options
There are several visa options for entering the Republic of China (Taiwan) to attend the 8th ABRN Conference. The appropriate visa option depends on your nationality:
- Entry permit - Available to Residents of Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.
- Visa-exempt Entry - Available to citizens of select countries for short stays.
- Visitor Visa - Participants will need to submit the visa application at their nearest Taiwan Embassy or Mission Abroad.
- Travel Authorization Certificate - Available to citizens of India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Lao. Kindly note that the eligible applicants have to meet specific requirements (see eligibility)
Invitation Letters
The 8th ABRN conference organisers are able to provide Invitation letters upon request to support your visa application. Should you wish to request an Invitation Letter, please click here.
Notes:
We can only issue Invitation letters for:
- Participants whose submission has been accepted by the 8th ABRN selection committee
- Observers who have completed the Conference Registration
- We cannot provide Sponsorship Letters or Guarantee Letters.
- Please note that due to the summer vacation period, any requests submitted before 1 September 2025 will be processed starting from 1 September.
- Please allow up to 15 working days for processing time.
Taiwan Arrival Card
The National Immigration Agency now provides an online Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) for foreign nationals. Travellers may fill out the online form within 3 days prior to their arrival in Taiwan to help reduce immigration clearance waiting time. Participants who do not hold the Taiwan's Alien Resident Certificate, Resident Visa, or Diplomatic ID card are encouraged to make use of this service.

Mainland Residents or Mainland Residents living abroad (including Hong Kong and Macau)
We recommend applying for an entry permit well in advance, preferably at least 3 months before the start of the 8th ABRN Conference, as the process can be timely.

Hong Kong or Macau Residents

Entry Permit Support for Participants with Mainland Chinese Citizenship
The 8th ABRN Local Organiser, Department of Geography at National Taiwan University, offers assistance to participants holding Mainland Chinese citizenship in applying for an entry permit.
Please review the details in this document carefully. If you wish to request this application support, ensure that all required documents are submitted no later than 22 September 2025.
Important Information:
If you are currently employed or enrolled at any of the following universities, you will not be permitted to enter Taiwan:
Jinan University (Guangzhou), Huaqiao University, Beijing Chinese Language and Culture College, Beihang University (Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics), Beijing Institute of Technology, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin Engineering University.
Nationals of the following countries are eligible for Taiwan’s visa-exemption programme. The permitted duration of stay varies depending on your nationality. Please ensure to complete a Taiwan's Online Immigration Arrival Card within three days prior to your arrival in Taiwan.

Up to 90 days
Albania, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Eswatini*, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Holy See, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan*, Kosovo, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Marshall Island*, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia*(effective until March 31, 2030), Norway, Palau, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tuvalu*, United Kingdom, and United States of America*
Up to 30 days
Belize*, Malaysia, Nauru, Saint Kitts and Nevis*, Saint Lucia*, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Singapore.
Special cases
- Nationals of Nicaragua, Honduras*, and Dominican Republic, except those holding diplomatic or official/service passports, are eligible for the visa-exemption program, with a duration of stay of up to 90 days.
- Nationals of the Kingdom of Thailand, the Philippines, and Brunei (including Brunei Certificate of Identity holders), except those holding diplomatic or official/service passports, are eligible for the visa-exemption program, with a duration of stay of up to 14 days (effective until July 31, 2026).
*Holders of Belize, Eswatini, Nauru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Tuvalu passports with place of birth recorded on the passport data page as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, the People's Republic of China, Syria, and Yemen are ineligible for the visa exemption. Holders of Honduran passports with place of birth recorded on the passport data page as the People's Republic of China are also ineligible for the visa exemption.
If your nationality is not listed on the above 2 categories. You will be required to apply for a General Visa at your nearest Taiwan Embassy or Mission Abroad (see list). Please ensure to start your application early and no later than 2 months before the conference starts. Required documents
Please note that the list below outlines general required documents. Each Taiwan embassy or mission may request specific (additional) documents. Kindly confirm the details of required documents with your local Taiwan Embassy or Mission aboard.
- Valid passport (at least 6 months validity)
- Visa photos
- Completed visa application form
- Official invitation letter from the conference organiser (available upon request)
- Proof of travel (flight itinerary)
- Accommodation details
- Other supporting documents (proof of employment, bank statements, etc.)
