IIAS distinguishes between 'research fellows', and 'affiliated fellows'. While research fellows are researchers attached to one of IIAS’s research programmes, affiliated fellows spend a limited period at IIAS to work on their own research project.
Affiliated Fellowship Application

A. IIAS Fellowship application
This position is intended for visiting, excellent scholars from around the world to work on an individual piece of research at IIAS. A limited number of research grants are available for these positions.

B. ASC-IIAS Fellowship application (African-Asian relations)
This fellowship is intended for scholars in the field of African-Asian relations and is jointly offered by IIAS and the African Studies Centre in Leiden.

C. Gonda Fellowship at IIAS
The J. Gonda Fund Foundation supports the scholarly study of Sanskrit, other Indian languages and literature, and Indian cultural history. It also awards a Gonda fellowship for a research period at IIAS.

IIAS facilitates the work of various professors as part of agreements with Dutch universities, foreign ministries and funding organisations. IIAS Professors are attached to IIAS to teach, do research, and organise seminars in the Netherlands (or other European countries).
Positions are only awarded upon vacancy as advertised on the IIAS website, or by international agreement after nomination by the home country/institute.
